Edibles and Driving Planner
Edibles run long. Enter what you ate and when, and this planner gives you the earliest you should even consider driving, built on Health Canada and CCSA guidance rather than a made-up impairment formula.
Your experience with edibles
Any alcohol tonight?
- If you feel anything at all, you are not done waiting. The clock is a floor, not a finish line.
- Edibles peak two to four hours after eating and can keep working for eight to twelve, with residual effects the next morning.
This is a planning floor built on Canadian public-health guidance, not a legal or safety clearance. There is no calculator for impairment. If in any doubt, do not drive: book a ride, or wait until tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions
How long after an edible can I drive in Canada?
There is no safe number, and no calculator can give one. Canadian public-health guidance says to wait at least six hours after inhaling cannabis and longer after edibles, whose effects can last twelve hours or more. This planner uses a twelve-hour floor, extends it for larger doses and less experience, and pushes it to a full day with any alcohol. If you feel anything, you are not done waiting.
What are the legal THC limits for driving in Canada?
Under the Criminal Code it is an offence to drive with 2 nanograms or more of THC per millilitre of blood (summary conviction), 5 or more (hybrid offence), or 2.5 or more combined with 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Provinces add their own administrative penalties, and new and young drivers face zero-tolerance rules in most provinces.
Why do edibles keep you impaired longer than smoking?
Eaten THC is processed by the liver into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is potent and long-lasting. Effects start 30 minutes to two hours after eating, peak around two to four hours, and commonly continue for eight to twelve hours, with a foggy morning after possible at higher doses.
Can I test myself before driving?
Not meaningfully. Blood THC does not track how impaired you feel, and feeling fine is not the same as being unimpaired. The only reliable plan is time: eat early, sleep on it, and book a ride if there is any doubt.
