THC tolerance: why edibles stop hitting and what resets it
If the same 10 mg gummy that once wrote off an evening now barely registers, nothing is wrong with your edibles. Tolerance is your brain doing exactly what brains do: adapting to a signal it keeps receiving.
How does THC tolerance build?
THC works by binding CB1 receptors in the brain. Hit those receptors regularly and the brain responds by dialling them down — fewer receptors, less sensitivity. The signal that once felt loud now lands quietly, so the same dose does less. This is receptor downregulation, and it happens faster with daily use and higher doses.
Tolerance to edibles tracks overall cannabis use, not just edible use. A daily smoker trying their first brownie is not a beginner in the receptor sense — which is one reason the classic advice to start low still applies across formats.
How fast does a tolerance break work?
Faster than most people expect. Receptor availability begins recovering within roughly two days of stopping, and studies suggest much of the recovery happens inside the first week, with continued gains over three to four weeks. A weekend off helps a little; one to two weeks is where most people notice the reset; a month is close to a full one.
After a break, dose like it is your first time again. The most common post-break mistake is returning at the old dose, which the newly re-sensitised receptors receive at full volume.
Can you keep tolerance low without breaks?
Mostly by consuming less often and at lower doses — tolerance is a dose-times-frequency equation with no known cheat code. Keeping most sessions at the minimum effective dose, spacing sessions out, and reserving bigger doses for occasions slows the climb considerably. Microdose-scale edibles of 1 to 2.5 mg are a practical way to hold the line.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't edibles affect me anymore?
Regular THC use downregulates the brain's CB1 receptors, so the same dose produces less effect. A one-to-two-week break restores most sensitivity.
How long should a tolerance break be?
Two days starts the reset, one to two weeks captures most of it, and around four weeks is close to a full recovery for most people.
Does CBD build tolerance too?
CBD does not appear to build tolerance the way THC does; some evidence points the opposite direction. The tolerance that matters for edibles is THC tolerance.
