Cannabis edible rules by province: age, where to buy, and home growing
Cannabis is legal across Canada under one federal law, but the details a home cook runs into, the age on the door, where flower is sold, and whether four plants on the balcony are allowed, are provincial. This is the map as of September 2026. Provinces do change these rules, so the last word is always your province's own cannabis page.
What is the same everywhere in Canada?
Adults may buy from a licensed retailer, carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or its equivalent) in public, make edibles at home without organic solvents, and share with other adults. Legal edibles are capped at 10 mg of THC per package. Driving impaired is a criminal offence with per se blood limits. None of that varies by province.
The federal equivalency table matters for edibles: 30 grams of dried flower equals 450 grams of edible product, which is why a home baker carrying a tray of brownies is, on paper, carrying a lot of cannabis. Keep homemade edibles at home.
What is the legal age, and where do I buy?
The legal age is 19 in most provinces and territories. Alberta sets it at 18 and Quebec at 21. Retail differs: Quebec and several Atlantic provinces sell only through a government store, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba license private shops alongside or instead of a public one, and most provinces run or license an online store that ships within the province.
For cooking, the label and the price per gram matter more than the storefront. Larger formats (14 g and 28 g) are usually the cheapest per gram, and any licensed product carries the excise stamp and a tested THC number.
Can I grow my own plants for cooking?
Federally, up to four plants per household. Quebec prohibits home growing under provincial law, Manitoba only lifted its own ban recently, and some provinces add conditions such as growing out of public view or landlord and condominium rules. Elsewhere, four plants is allowed and is a common route to cheap infusion flower, with the trade-off that home-grown potency is a guess until you dose carefully.
Whatever you grow or buy, the kitchen rules do not change: decarb it, infuse it, calculate the batch, and label the jar.
