Do you need to decarb before making cannabutter?

Yes. Raw cannabis is mostly THCA, which is not meaningfully intoxicating. Gentle heat turns it into THC, and that step, decarboxylation, has to happen before or during infusion. Skip it and your butter comes out weak and unpredictable, and none of the dosing math holds.

What does decarbing actually do?

The living plant makes THCA, an acid form of THC. Heat knocks off part of that molecule and turns it into THC, the compound that produces the effects. Smoking does this instantly, which is why nobody thinks about it. In the kitchen you have to do it on purpose.

Can't the butter or the oven do it for you?

Only partly. An infusion is kept gentle, around 70 to 90 C (160 to 200 F), to protect the THC, and at those temperatures conversion is slow and incomplete. The inside of a baking brownie stays near 100 C, too cool to finish the job either. The result is a batch that is weaker than expected and different from one batch to the next.

How do you decarb properly?

Spread broken-up flower on a lined tray and bake it at about 115 C (240 F) for around 40 minutes, until it is dry and lightly toasted rather than brown. Hotter is not better: higher heat starts destroying THC and burns off flavour.

Then infuse low and slow. The site's calculators assume a decarb and an infusion efficiency, so a proper decarb is what makes the milligrams on your label match what is in the butter.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you don't decarb before making cannabutter?

Most of the THCA never converts, so the butter is far weaker than the math says and inconsistent between batches.

What temperature do you decarb at?

Around 115 C (240 F) for about 40 minutes. Higher temperatures start to break THC down.

Does baking decarb cannabis?

Not fully. Baked goods stay near 100 C inside, which is too cool and too short to convert raw flower reliably. Decarb first, then bake with the finished butter.
